On privacy and data protection
2.1 Introducing privacy
Privacy protection means
- keeping things for oneself
- having space to be themselves
- respecting other people's privacy
2.2 Introducing personal data protection
- Know what is exactly 'personal data'.
- Learn about 'sensitive data', or data deserving special protection.
- What can happen if someone misuses personal information?
2.4 Decide wisely, and remember to let people decide too
- Never give away data about them without the permission of parents or another trusted adult.
- Before using personal data about other people, they should ask them – and respect their choices.
2.7 Keeping secrets really secret
-
Just like there are some people who could be tempted to steal their stuff, there are some people who would like to steal their data.
Think about where to store data.
- Never give data about yourself to strangers.
2.8 Family, privacy and personal data protection
- Children should be made aware that parents or other trusted adults have a key role in helping them protect their privacy and personal data.
- If children feel their parents are invading their privacy, or not protecting their rights, they should talk with them about this.
- Parents could have a good reason for doing what they do, or, in some cases, not have realised that they were interfering with their children's privacy.
2.10 Taking action
- Children know that they can exercise their control on data about them with the help of their parents or a responsible adult.
- Children know that there exists a data protection authority that has the mission to ensure that everybody complies with personal data protection rules.
- Children know that if they ever find online something that disturbs them, it is better to call for help.
